Dr. Fayrer's Treatment of Snake-Bite by Artificial Respiration
نویسنده
چکیده
In the November (1872) number of the Indian Medical Gazette I published my first series of experiments oil artificial respirution in snake-poisoning, and the results I considered unfavourable. Judging, however, from the experiments I have since made, I am led to believe that the unsatisfactory results were due more particularly to faulty artificial respiration. It will be observed by the following experiments, that in one caso the heart's action was maintained for 10 hours, and then coased only on the discontinuance of the artificial respiration ; and in another, the heart was kept beating for 21 hours and 35 minutes, sensibility being restored after it had been completely lost. The results, as shown by these experiments, are therefore

able series of experiments conducted by Dr. Fayrer before his departure from India was first given to the public. We have, through the authors' courtesy, been put in possession of some additional experiments bearing more particularly on the physiological action of the venom conducted by Drs. Fayrer and Lauder Brunton in London. These have been published in the proceedings of the Royal Society j...
متن کاملAn Experience with Manual Ventilation in Respiratory Paralysis Due to Indian Common Krait (Bungarus Caeruleus) Bite
Background: Bungarus caeruleus (common krait) bite during monsoon season is common in northwest India. Respiratory failure is responsible for high mortality in the victims. In this study we report our experience with manual ventilation using bag valve mask (BVM) in patients with neuroparalysis due to common krait bite. Methods:This prospective study was conducted between June 2009 and December...

Cobra venom consists of a neurotoxin which is responsible for respiratory paralysis simulating that associated with a non-depolarizing muscle relaxant. A combination of artificial respiration and neostigmine has been useful in resuscitating a child bitten by a snake.

Sir,?Will you kindly permit me to offer a few remarks ori the two cases of snake-bite contained in your issue of the 1st instant, by Surgeon-General Cornish, C. I. E., and Dr. Bull respectively. As regards Dr. Cornish's remark that neither Fayrer nor Ewart in their works dwell on the value of suction in the treatment of snake-bite, I would point out that Dr. Cornish has evidently overlooked tha...
متن کاملThe Treatment of Snake-Bite
Sir,?Referring to Dr. Banerjee's letter in the October 1926 issue of the Gazette, I would refer him to Wall's book on the Poisonous Terrestrial Snakes of India and Ceylon, published by the Bombay Natural History Society, in which book the symptoms and treatment of snake poisoning are gone into very thoroughly. Dr. Banerjee's statement is quite correct that sloughing may be produced by the venom...
